Downtown Son Returns: Flies Back to the Coop
Sander Hicks, the Beau Friedlander of his
day (albeit with a greater propensity for socialist work songs),
is back for a second act. Hicks, the former publisher of defunct
downtown press Soft Skull, has sent a dispatch to the press announcing
"Drench Kiss Media," which will do the expected mix
of left-wing and messily energetic books. The first title is Whistleblowers:
The Authoritative Guide to the Case against the Official Story
of 9/11. In his note, Hicks cites his and co-founder
Charles Shaw's "vitality of youth and the wisdom of experience"
and notes his ability to "ruffle feathers." Hicks is
best known for picking up J.H. Hatfield's book that contained
the Bush cocaine allegations after SMP dropped it. He became a
character in the documentary about that episode titled Horns
and Halos.
Publisher's Weekly
Drench Kiss is a multi-media attack that includes
print publishing, new media, and innovative projects in television
and film. Drench Kiss publishes books that are so truthful, so powerful,
other publishers are frightened of them. We will examine secrets
currently unexamined and broaden the parameters of public discourse
set currently by the Establishment media. The following is an excerpt
from our Executive
Summary:
The Bush Administration has become synonymous with aggression,
crony capitalism and assaults on liberty. Bush's “War on Terror”
is a war of perception, seeking to distract the American people
from the real politics they deserve.
Our economy is in shambles, with unemployment at a nine-year
high. The reputation of the US suffers abroad, as global security
vanishes and panic ascends. Post-Iraq, no nation can be completely
certain they won't be preemptively attacked on a pretext that later
proves fraudulent. Since 9/11, Bush has waged two wars that have
done little for freedom and democracy and much for augmenting the
position of the US as the strategic lynchpin of Central Asia. New
York Times columnist Paul Krugman called the forged justifications
for the attack on Iraq a scandal that dwarfs Watergate. But his
reasoned analysis is rare in this world of big corporate media,
where image and sentiment drown out intelligent analysis.
Drench Kiss Media Corporation has a solution: The Truth Destabilizes
Tyranny. This new media corporation is a living act of resistance.
Our immediate goal is nothing less than the electoral demise of
the Bush Administration. Their loss in 2004 is freedom’s gain.
Their removal is possible, because the truth still matters. Yes,
Bush has already raised $35m for Campaign 2004, but fresh, progressive
upstart Howard Dean was able to raise $3m in a single week after
winning the MoveOn.org primary. Dean is a fresh New England progressive
and he personifies a growing, turbulent, insurgent mood of the country
as it wakes from its stupor.
